Young People Set Sail on Life-Changing Tall Ship Voyage Across Irish Sea
A group of young people from Merseyside took part in a once-in-a-lifetime sailing experience this summer, embarking on a Tall Ship voyage aboard the Maybe as part of the MAST (Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust) programme.
Over the course of the week-long journey, participants sailed from Liverpool across the Irish Sea, visiting ports including Dublin and the Isle of Man, before returning home with new skills, confidence, and lifelong memories.
The voyage was far more than just time at sea. Young people became part of a fully functioning crew, taking on real responsibilities such as hoisting sails, navigating, preparing meals, and maintaining the ship. Each day presented new challenges, requiring teamwork, resilience, and communication.
For many on board, the experience was transformational. Living and working closely together in a unique environment pushed participants out of their comfort zones and allowed them to develop independence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of achievement.
MAST, a youth-focused charity, uses maritime experiences to support young people aged 13–20 in building confidence, developing life skills, and accessing opportunities they may not otherwise have. The Tall Ship voyage remains one of the organisation’s flagship opportunities, offering a powerful blend of adventure and personal development.
One participant described the experience as “something I’ll never forget,” highlighting the friendships formed and the sense of accomplishment gained from being part of the crew.
The voyage also reflects MAST’s wider commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young people across the region, helping them to grow, connect, and realise their potential.
As the young crew returned to Liverpool, they brought back not only stories of their journey, but also increased confidence, stronger relationships, and a renewed sense of what they are capable of achieving.
