Young People Set Sail on Transformational Tall Ship Voyage Aboard the Spirit of Falmouth
A group of young people from Merseyside have completed a life-changing Tall Ship voyage this summer, sailing aboard the Spirit of Falmouth as part of the MAST (Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust) programme.
Setting sail from Liverpool, the crew embarked on a week-long journey across the Irish Sea, travelling to Conwy Bay, Llandudno, Bangor, and the Isle of Man. Throughout the voyage, young people became fully immersed in life on board, taking on the responsibilities of a working crew.
From hoisting sails and steering the ship to preparing meals and maintaining the vessel, every participant played an active role. The voyage operated on a watch system, with young people working in teams across long sailing days and experiencing a night sail — a standout moment for many.
Despite mixed weather conditions, from choppy seas to brighter spells along the coastline, the group demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and determination. Each leg of the journey brought new challenges and opportunities to build confidence and develop practical skills.
Operated in partnership with Turn to Starboard, the Spirit of Falmouth provides a unique environment where young people can step outside their comfort zones and grow in confidence.
For many involved, the experience was truly transformational. Living and working together at sea encouraged independence, strengthened communication skills, and fostered a strong sense of achievement. Participants returned not only with unforgettable memories, but with a renewed belief in their own abilities.
MAST, a youth charity working with 13–20 year olds across Merseyside, continues to create meaningful opportunities that inspire young people through adventure, leadership, and teamwork. The Tall Ship voyage remains a cornerstone of this work, offering a powerful experience that extends far beyond the week at sea.
One participant described the voyage as “an experience I’ll never forget,” highlighting the friendships formed and the pride in being part of the crew.
As the Spirit of Falmouth returned home, it marked not just the end of a journey, but the beginning of new ambitions for the young people on board.
